The second-generation MDX has a larger track and longer wheelbase than the previous MDX, but visibility to the rear has declined from the prior generation. The Acura MDX’s unit-body was developed with Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) team. It was designed to absorb more energy in a collision. This generation was Acura’s successful attempt at making the MDX one of the safest SUVs in its class, second only to Volvo XC90.

In the 2009 model Acura improved the Safety features even more by introducing AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic, blind spot information system (BSI), in-dash navigation system with rearview camera. 2009 vehicles also have an energy absorbing body design and front row side torso airbags with rollover sensors.
